Down a dew-dampened meadow
through seldom-trampled road
the pond waits behind the reeds.
Silky purls lap shallow and dimly
the waters: a womb, a home, a meal.
Silty toads go wrangling bugs.
Come by, Long-Legs,
Come you slinking ankle-deep.
Deal out your lilting call for the lightning sky
ragged, split, spark.
And while your feathers fold up tight against you
bright fireflies light
up that froggy, starry din
This hum, this shriek, this sigh.
