Dear Readers,
This is the third issue we’ve ended with a poem explicitly about grace. This was deliberate. Perhaps this is an odd choice for an editor of a magazine based on shelter, not faith. But, on the other hand, perhaps this makes all the sense in the world.
All that Catholic education, and no one could tell me what grace means. I am learning as I go.
The issue is long, with over 90 pieces chosen out of over 800 submissions (!), so I will keep my letter brief to help the page count and leave some space at the bottom for art in the print edition.
Poet Tammy Smith writes: “like Grace / I am balanced on a blade.” We all feel that way too, these days, I’d wager, between the destruction of civil rights, disease, wars, and unlivable wages, and the normalization of violence every day.
May Grace land a triple axel.
Best,
Nadia Arioli
