I understand how a body becomes bread. They set you on my chest, vernix-swirled quiet and watchful as a new fawn, breath and need threading us together, making us one. Your soft cry leavens me, my chest rises and splits. I have given myself up. I will never be whole again.

Danielle Boodoo-Fortuné is a poet and visual artist from Trinidad and Tobago.
